BEYOND BRUNCH: Creative Ideas for a Chicago Mother’s Day – by Elise Soeder
Mother’s Day is just around the corner, on Sunday, May 9! We at the Museum of Illusions certainly don’t have anything against a good brunch, but we love fun, alternative ways to celebrate loved ones. Our downtown location has been the destination for plenty of birthdays and anniversaries, so why not Mother’s Day too? We will be open all Mother’s Day weekend, and as much as we would love to have literally everyone and their mother join us to celebrate, our capacity is limited and tickets sell out fast! Make sure you snag them well in advance if you’re planning to bring Mom to our mind-bending museum.

Vaccinated and can safely visit mom? Pick up her favorite tea and treats and join her for afternoon tea! The Driehaus Museum focuses on “the art, architecture and design of the late 19th century to the present” and is housed in a restored downtown mansion from 1883. While they are open for visitors and would normally host their Mother’s Day tea in-person, the museum moved this event to the safety of Zoom this year. Once the kettle is on and the finger sandwiches are ready, you and Mom will learn all about the tradition and artistry of afternoon tea from actor and history scholar Leslie Goddard, Ph.D. The Driehaus Museum store also carries Victorian-styled teaware if you’re looking for a themed gift for mom. Pinkies up!

The Lincoln Park Conservatory has re-opened and is welcoming guests for their annual spring flower show. This year’s theme is “Pretty In Pink,” and features azaleas, tulips, orchids, hydrangeas, and more–all in varying shades of pink. This event runs until Mother’s Day and requires registration in advance. Plus, it’s free!
(Hint: The Garfield Park Conservatory is also hosting a flower show! That one ends May 5.)

For the Adventurer
If you’ve got an outdoorsy mom, try getting out on the water and in the sunshine with Kayak Chicago. They have three different locations in the city, and offer classes, tours, and rentals so you can customize your adventure. (Don’t worry, the rentals come with a basic orientation to kayaking!) Depending on the weather and conditions on the water, their opening hours may vary, so we suggest giving them a call before you take off for the lake with Mom.
Fingers crossed for beautiful weather!
